Quarry House Tavern in Silver Spring is my favorite dive bar. It’s dark and loud and the greasy food is served in checkered paper-lined plastic baskets. Most importantly, it’s cheap eats jackpot. Just look for the ominous-looking stairs on the corner of Wayne and Bonifant that seem to descend into nothingness.
If you don’t have any prudish objection to tipping a few back on Monday or Tuesday nights, then come for the amazing dinner specials. If you stroll in on a Monday night, you can treat yourself to a delicious and juicy burger for half price. Their basic ⅓ lb. burger usually puts you back $7.00, but $3.50 plus a modest charge for extra toppings (many popular topping combos are just under $1.00 extra). I’ve had several of these dinners and enjoyed every juicy, perfectly cooked-to-order bite. They come with a side of housemade chips or tots so there's plenty to fill an empty stomach. Even a cheapskate like me can feel economically empowered enough to add a beer to the bill.
Tuesday offers another mouth-watering dinner special for people who need an evening out on a tight budget: three steak soft tacos and a margarita for $10.00. This isn’t the questionable quality ‘ground meat’ found at a certain cut rate, high volume establishment, but juicy, grilled steak strips. The tortillas were also loaded with chopped onions, peppers, bite-size cross sections of jalapeno peppers, and avocado wedges. The tacos come with a standard vinegar-based hot sauce and a cilantro sauce on the side and I by far preferred the cilantro sauce drizzled over my tacos. The margarita wasn’t the largest or most potent, but you’d have to have some real brass ones to ask for more than what you’re already getting for a measly $10.00.
Will we be back for these deals? Yes. Again and again.
